netiquette texting etiquette

Texting is great – it enables us to keep in touch with others efficiently and in times when talking on the phone simply won’t work.  However, there are certain text messaging etiquette rules we should all know and follow.

Text messaging is a convenient means of communication.  It allows us to keep in touch in times when talking on our cell phones may not be an option or appropriate.  However, along with benefits comes responsibilities, which is where text messaging etiquette comes into play.

  • Never text and drive. There are plenty of real life pictures on the internet of what happens when you do this.  We all know it is impossible to text and keep your attention on the road.
  • While at work, if you are going to text message, be subtle about it. Your employer will not appreciate you typing out texts all day instead of doing your job!
  • Text chain messages are just as annoying as email chain messages; don’t forward text chain messages on.
  • It is not appropriate to conduct important communications via text. This can include life changing events such as a marriage proposal, a job offer, a job firing and the like.
  • Don’t miss out on what’s going on around you because you’ve got your nose buried in your phone text messaging others.  This is for safety as well as social reasons.  Just like you wouldn’t appreciate being ignored, neither do others.
  • You don’t have to reply to every text message you receive the second you receive it. Some text messages do not even require a reply.
  • Texting in a movie theater is distracting.

It’s sad when you’re out and you see groups of people at dinner or an event, all ignoring each other and all engrossed in whatever meaningless conversation they’re having via text with someone else.  Put your phones away and enjoy life!  If you really want to be around those people you are texting, hang out with them instead!
